ENG 3278

New Holland ENG 3278 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM Internal Supply Voltage Too High - CJ940 Above Limit

Issue description

This code indicates that the internal power supply voltage to a specific component (CJ940) inside the Engine Control Module (ECM) has exceeded the maximum allowable limit. This is often accompanied by the sub-status: 'F5C: ECU Power stages: Irregular switch off or reset of ECU without completely shutdown - not repairable'.

Check the cause

  1. Test the battery and alternator for correct voltage supply to rule out an overcharging alternator causing high voltage spikes.

  2. Inspect the main engine wiring harness and ECM power supply lines for defective wiring or a short-to-power (short circuit to battery voltage).

  3. Evaluate the EDC to confirm if the fault is an internal defect (if battery voltage and wiring harness are normal).

Repair steps

  1. Verify charging system voltage

Using a multimeter, verify that the machine's charging system is not exceeding normal operating voltage (typically ~14.4V for a 12V system). Repair the alternator if it is overcharging.

  2. Inspect ECM connectors

Disconnect the ECM connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bridging.

  3. Test power supply pins

Test the power supply pins on the harness side to ensure they are receiving the correct voltage and are not shorted to a higher voltage source.

  4. Confirm internal ECM failure

If external voltage and wiring are correct, the internal CJ940 power stage of the ECM has failed. According to CNH engineering specifications, this specific internal failure is 'not repairable'.

  5. Remove faulty ECM

Remove the faulty Engine Control Module.

  6. Install replacement ECM

    Install a replacement ECM.

  7. Program/flash replacement ECM

A new or donor ECM will require programming/flashing with the correct dataset (software version) for your specific machine using the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to sync with the immobilizer and vehicle controller.
