Issue description

This code indicates that the internal power supply voltage within the engine's computer has dropped below the minimum threshold required for reliable operation. The "CJ940" refers to a specific internal component or monitoring circuit within the Bosch engine control unit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the machine's batteries are fully charged and pass a load test to rule out low system voltage

  2. Inspect the main power and ground pins at the ECM connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or damaged wires causing a voltage drop

  3. Check for a 5V sensor reference short by disconnecting engine sensors one by one to see if the internal voltage recovers

Repair steps

  1. Test the battery voltage with a multimeter.

    If voltage is low, charge or replace the batteries and re-test.

  2. Disconnect the main harnesses from the ECM.

    Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure the ground straps attached to the engine block/chassis are tight and free of rust.

  3. Clear the fault codes using a CNH EST diagnostic tool.

    If code 3279 returns immediately upon key-on, begin unplugging engine sensors sequentially. If unplugging a specific sensor causes the code to change to a standard sensor open-circuit code and the internal voltage normalizes, replace that shorted sensor or repair its wiring.

  4. Verify the external power supply to the ECM.

    If the external power supply to the ECM is verified as good (12V/24V reaching the pins) and no external sensors are shorted, the ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure on the CJ940 circuit.

  5. Remove the faulty ECM.

    Send the original ECM to a specialized ECU repair service for internal micro-soldering, or purchase a replacement unit and have the original software/immobilizer data "cloned" onto it.

  6. Reinstall the repaired/cloned ECM.

    Clear all codes, and test run the machine.
