New Holland ENG 3281 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Sensor Supply Voltage 1 - Low
Issue description
The engine controller provides three independent 5V reference voltage supplies to various engine sensors. Fault code 3281 indicates that the voltage on Supply Circuit 1 has dropped below the acceptable limit. A 'Low' voltage condition typically means the 5V circuit is being pulled down by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted sensor internally pulling the voltage down, or an internal hardware failure within the engine controller itself.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- New Holland T7 series (T7.220, T7.270)
- New Holland T8 series
- New Holland CR and CX series (CR9090, CX8080, CX8090)
- New Holland B110B / LB110 backhoes
- New Holland E385 and E485 excavators
Check the cause
Check battery voltage and ensure the ECM is receiving proper power
Disconnect the sensors sharing Supply Circuit 1 one at a time (Oil pressure/temp, Boost pressure/temp, Fuel low pressure/temp) to isolate the circuit
Monitor the voltage at the pins with a multimeter to see if the 5V reference returns to normal after unplugging a specific sensor, indicating an internal short in that sensor
Inspect the engine wiring harness and connectors for chafing, corrosion, or a short to ground if unplugging sensors does not restore the 5V supply
Test the ECM output with all sensors unplugged and harness verified good to determine if the ECM has failed internally
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Always disconnect the battery before repairing wiring or replacing the ECM.
Replace shorted sensor
If a specific sensor was identified as shorted during diagnostics (voltage returned to 5V when unplugged), replace that sensor.
Repair or replace wiring harness
If the wiring harness is damaged or shorted to ground, repair the shorted wires or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Engine Control Module
If the ECM is internally shorted (no 5V output with good harness and unplugged sensors), replace the ECM and program it to the specific machine's chassis/engine serial number.
Reconnect and clear codes
Reconnect all sensors and battery cables. Use approved New Holland/CNH diagnostic equipment (EST) to clear the error code. Run the engine to verify the 5V supply remains stable.
