ENG 3282

New Holland ENG 3282 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Timeout of CAN Message WSI (Wheel Speed Info)

Issue description

This code indicates a communication failure on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN bus). Specifically, the engine controller is expecting to receive a continuous data message containing the vehicle's wheel speed information (WSI) from the transmission controller or instrument cluster, but that message has timed out or is missing.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.xxx Series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A Combines
  • W-Series (e.g., W130B)

Check the cause

  1. Confirm stable battery voltage and inspect main chassis/cab grounds, as low voltage or bad grounds can cause CAN modules to drop offline.

  2. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: Turn the ignition OFF and measure resistance at the diagnostic port between CAN High and CAN Low pins (should be approximately 60 ohms).

  3. Perform a CAN Bus Voltage Test: Turn the key ON and measure voltage to ground. CAN High should be 2.5V to 2.7V, and CAN Low should be 2.3V to 2.5V.

  4. Inspect wiring looms at movement points (cab pivot, steering column, transmission housing) for chafing.

  5. Check connectors at the Engine ECU, Transmission Controller (TCM), and Advanced Instrument Cluster (AIC) for moisture or pushed-out pins.

  6. Ensure diagnostic power fuses (such as the 10A F9 fuse in the ECC panel) are not blown.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the main battery disconnect switch before unplugging any modules.

  2. Clean and Secure Connectors

Disconnect the harnesses at the Engine ECU, the Transmission Controller, and the Wheel Speed Sensor. Spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, allow them to dry, and apply a light coat of dielectric grease. Reconnect them, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  3. Repair CAN Wiring (If Applicable)

If the resistance test failed, trace the CAN lines between the transmission controller and the engine ECU. Locate the break or short. Repair the wire using proper solder and heat-shrink tubing (do not twist wires together).

  4. Replace the Wheel Speed Sensor (If Applicable)

If the CAN bus is perfectly intact but the transmission controller is not broadcasting the WSI message because it isn't reading wheel speed, locate the wheel speed sensor on the transmission housing or wheel hub. Remove the retaining bolt, pull the old sensor, insert the new sensor, and plug in the pigtail connector.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect battery power. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner (like Jaltest) to clear the ENG 3282 code.

  6. Test Drive

Operate the machine through its gears to verify that the wheel speed registers on the dash and the fault code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • CNH Wheel Speed Sensor

    169715FP

Part numbers vary heavily depending on whether the machine is a T8 tractor, a combine, or a wheel loader. Always verify the specific sensor part number against the machine's serial number in the CNH parts catalog.

  • CNH Transmission Speed Sensor

    87548200

Part numbers vary heavily depending on whether the machine is a T8 tractor, a combine, or a wheel loader. Always verify the specific sensor part number against the machine's serial number in the CNH parts catalog.

  • Generic 120-ohm terminating resistors or CAN bus twisted-pair wiring pigtails

    If the harness is damaged.
