New Holland ENG 3289 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Turbo Compound Monitoring - Signal Low

Issue description

The voltage returning from the Turbo Compound Sensor to the control module has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically points to an electrical issue such as a short to ground in the signal circuit, an open circuit in the 5V reference wire, or a completely failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the Turbo Compound Sensor for signs of physical damage, melting, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  2. With the key ON and engine OFF, disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the ECU is supplying a +5V reference to the sensor.

  3. Test the signal wire between the sensor connector and the ECU harness for continuity and check for a short to ground (the most common cause of a Signal Low code).

  4. If the wiring is intact, the 5V reference is present, and the ground is good, suspect an internal sensor failure pulling the signal voltage down.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to protect the engine ECU.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Turbo Compound Sensor on the engine, which is mounted near the secondary turbo compound turbine and gear reduction drive assembly.

  3. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or a broken wire in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness pigtail.

  4. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring tested perfectly, remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the Turbo Compound Sensor in place and extract the sensor.

  5. Install New Sensor

    Insert the new sensor, torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications, and securely reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EASy tool) to the machine's diagnostic port and clear the inactive ENG 3289 / 14E fault code.

  7. Test Run

    Start the engine and run it up to operating temperature under load to ensure the Turbo Compound system is monitored correctly and the fault code does not return.
