ENG 3290

New Holland ENG 3290 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbo Compound Monitoring - Signal Not Plausible

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an erratic, unexpected, or implausible signal from the turbo compound monitoring sensor. This condition will often trigger an automatic engine protection mode, resulting in torque limitation.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland CR9090 Elevation
  • New Holland CX8080 Elevation
  • New Holland CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A
  • New Holland FR600
  • New Holland T8.xxx Series

Check the cause

  1. Check ECU fault history using the CNH EASy diagnostic tool for exact DTCs and related torque limitation codes (e.g., 29E)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the turbo compound monitoring sensor for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins

  3. Verify the sensor's mounting, as a loose sensor can cause an erratic reading

  4. Ensure there is no mechanical failure in the drive system (fluid coupling and gears) causing the turbine to spin at an incorrect speed

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Sensor

Locate the turbo compound monitoring sensor on the FPT Cursor engine (typically mounted on the turbo compound turbine housing/flywheel drive area).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic check revealed damaged wiring, splice or replace the affected section of the engine harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the signal remains implausible, remove the retaining bolt, extract the faulty turbo compound sensor, and install a new unit.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH EASy diagnostic tool (or a compatible CAN-Bus DTC eraser) to clear the ENG 3290 fault code from the Engine ECU memory.

  6. Test Run

Run the engine under load to ensure the turbo compound system engages properly and the code does not return.
