ENG 3293

New Holland ENG 3293 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / EDC7): Cylinder 1 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searched

Issue description

The Engine ECU is commanding the Cylinder 1 injector to fire, but it cannot detect the electrical signature confirming the valve actually moved. This typically indicates a mechanically stuck or failing fuel injector on Cylinder 1, a failing injector solenoid, or high resistance, corrosion, or a partial break in the wiring harness between the ECU and the Cylinder 1 injector.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 1 injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose connections.

  2. Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector harness and check for oil intrusion, water, or corroded pins.

  3. Measure the resistance across the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid pins and compare it to a known good injector (e.g., Cylinder 2). Check the harness for continuity and ensure there is no short-to-ground.

  4. Perform a swap test: swap the Cylinder 1 injector with the Cylinder 2 injector. Clear codes and run the engine. If the code changes to ENG 3297 (Cylinder 2 BIP Search Failure), the injector is internally faulty. If the code remains ENG 3293, the issue is in the wiring harness or the Engine ECU itself.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize and Disconnect

    Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the engine to cool. Ensure the high-pressure fuel system is fully depressurized.

  2. Gain Access

    Remove the engine valve cover or necessary access panels to reach the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 injector.

  4. Remove Fuel Lines

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line (injection pipe) connecting the fuel rail to the Cylinder 1 injector. (Note: OEM guidelines strictly dictate that high-pressure fuel lines are single-use and must be replaced once loosened).

  5. Extract the Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head.

  6. Clean the Bore

    Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no carbon or debris falls into the cylinder. Remove the old copper sealing washer if it stuck in the bore.

  7. Install New Injector

    Fit the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and fresh O-rings. Seat it into the bore.

  8. Torque to Spec

    Install the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification for your specific FPT engine model.

  9. Install New Fuel Line

    Install a new high-pressure injection pipe and torque the fittings to spec.

  10. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall the valve cover, and reconnect the battery.

  11. ECU Programming

    Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), enter the new injector's IQA/Trim code (found printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU so it can properly calibrate fuel delivery.

  12. Test

    Clear the fault codes, prime the fuel system, and test run the engine to verify the repair.
