New Holland ENG 3296 – Engine Control Unit (Engine ECU / ECM): Cylinder 2 Specific Errors - Signal Low
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the engine control module has detected an abnormally low electrical signal (voltage or current) in the circuit for the Cylinder 2 fuel injector. This underlying condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the low-voltage wire of the injector cable, an open circuit, high resistance in the wiring or connectors, or an internal failure of the injector's solenoid.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 2 injector. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.
Connector Pinout Check: Disconnect the ECU and injector connectors. Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture. On the EDC7 UC31 ECU, the Cylinder 2 injector corresponds to pins 6 and 5 on the injector connector.
Injector Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the terminals of the Cylinder 2 injector. According to the Common Rail Engine Diagnostic Kit manual, a healthy injector solenoid should read approximately 0.57 ohms. If the reading is significantly different, the injector is faulty.
Pulse Test: Using a pulse tool, trigger the injector. Listen for an audible "click" at the injector. If it does not click, the injector is mechanically or electrically stuck/failed.
Harness Continuity Test: Measure the resistance of the wires from the ECU connector to the injector connector. Also, check for continuity to ground to rule out a short circuit.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Gain access to the engine valve cover
Gain access to the engine valve cover and the injector wiring harness area.
Disconnect the electrical connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 2 fuel injector.
Perform the resistance test and pulse test
Perform the resistance test (0.57 ohms) and pulse test on the injector. If it fails: Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and hold-down clamps, extract the faulty Cylinder 2 fuel injector, and install a replacement.
Trace the wiring back to the EDC7 ECU
If the injector tests good: Trace the wiring back to the EDC7 ECU. Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness. If the main harness connector at the ECU is damaged or heavily corroded, splice in a new 36-way EDC ECU repair harness.
Reconnect the injector and ECU connectors
Reconnect the injector and ECU connectors securely, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.
Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear inactive fault codes and test run
Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port, clear the inactive fault codes, and test run the engine to verify that code ENG 3296 does not return and the engine runs smoothly without misfires.
