ENG 3298

New Holland ENG 3298 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder 2 Specific Errors - Signal Not Plausible

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving an irregular, out-of-range, or illogical electrical signal from the fuel injector on Cylinder 2. It typically points to a failure in the injector's electrical solenoid, a break/short in the wiring harness, or a mechanical response failure within the injector itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T8.xxx Series
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • W170 B Tier 3 Wheel Loader
  • W190 B Tier 3 Wheel Loader

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EDC to the Cylinder 2 fuel injector for chafing, heat damage, or bare wires shorting against the engine block

  2. Disconnect the Cylinder 2 injector connector and check for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins

  3. Use a multimeter to test the resistance and continuity of the wiring harness from the injector plug back to the EDC pins

  4. Measure the resistance across the terminals of the Cylinder 2 injector to see if the internal solenoid is open or shorted out of OEM specification

  5. Look for accompanying rail pressure codes (e.g., 3297: Cylinder 2 injector mechanical response fault). If present, the injector is likely failing mechanically and bypassing fuel

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Injector

Remove the engine hood, valve cover, or any upper engine components required to access the Cylinder 2 fuel injector.

  3. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault, repair the broken wire or replace the injector wiring harness pigtail. If the wiring is intact, proceed to replace the injector.

  4. Remove Fuel Lines

Carefully loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the Cylinder 2 injector. Cap the fuel rail port and the line to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  5. Extract the Injector

Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the Cylinder 2 fuel injector from the cylinder head.

  6. Install New Injector

Clean the injector bore. Install the new FPT fuel injector, ensuring a new copper sealing washer and O-rings are used.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to exact OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector.

  8. System Bleed & Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASY/EST) to clear the fault codes and, if required by the specific EDC generation, program the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the ECU.

  9. Test

Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that code ENG 3298 does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • FPT Common Rail Fuel Injector (Cylinder 2)

OEM part numbers vary heavily based on the exact engine displacement (e.g., 4.5L, 6.7L, 8.7L). Must be verified against the specific machine's serial number.

  • Injector Sealing Kit

Includes the copper crush washer and O-rings (Generic fitment).

  • Fuel Pressure Sensor

Optional. If rail pressure codes accompany the injector code and the sensor is suspect. (Generic fitment: M18 x 1.5 thread, 27mm key size, oval connector).
