ENG 3301

New Holland ENG 3301 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC7 / EDC7UC31: Cylinder 3 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searches - Rail Pressure Negative Deviation too High on Minimum Metering

Issue description

The engine computer has tried and failed too many times to detect the opening of the Cylinder 3 injector. The system detects actual fuel rail pressure dropping significantly below target pressure on minimum fuel metering, indicating the fuel injector for Cylinder 3 is mechanically stuck open, leaking excessively, or has suffered a total solenoid failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the EDC7UC31 module to the Cylinder 3 injector for chafing, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to battery voltage.

  2. Use a diagnostic service tool to perform a cylinder contribution or injector cut-out test to confirm Cylinder 3 is the dead/leaking cylinder.

  3. Monitor actual vs. desired fuel rail pressure during cranking to verify if a stuck-open injector is preventing adequate starting pressure.

  4. Verify that the high-pressure pump's metering unit is not stuck.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Battery

Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the EDC7 module during repair.

  2. Access the Injectors

Remove the valve cover/rocker cover to access the fuel injectors on the engine block.

  3. Remove Cylinder 3 Injector

Disconnect the electrical connector for Cylinder 3. Remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp. Extract the faulty injector.

  4. Clean the Cup

Thoroughly clean the injector cup/sleeve in the cylinder head to ensure the new sealing rings seat properly.

  5. Install New Injector

Install the replacement injector with brand new sealing rings/washers (never reuse old seals). Torque the hold-down clamp and high-pressure lines to OEM specifications.

  6. Program the Injector (IQA Coding)

Note the 9-digit alphanumeric trim code printed on the top of the new Bosch injector. Using the OEM diagnostic tool, enter this code into the Engine ECU so it can adjust the fueling parameters for the new injector.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the ENG 3301 fault code from the EDC, and run the engine to verify rail pressure stabilizes and there are no leaks.
