New Holland ENG 3309 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Cylinder 5 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searches - Rail Pressure above Maximum Limit in Controlled Mode
Issue description
The engine computer failed to detect the exact millisecond the Cylinder 5 injector solenoid valve opened multiple times. This occurs simultaneously with the common rail fuel pressure exceeding its maximum allowable limit, which can physically prevent the injector valve from opening, or there may be a combined failure of the injector/wiring and the high-pressure fuel regulation system.

Check the cause
Verify actual vs. commanded fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic tool to check for a sticking fuel metering unit (M-PROP/FCA) or falsely high rail pressure sensor reading
Inspect the mechanical pressure relief valve (PRV) on the fuel rail to see if it has popped open due to overpressure
Check the wiring harness to the Cylinder 5 injector for short circuits (high side to ground, low side to battery) or open circuits
Perform an injector click test or cylinder contribution test via the diagnostic tool to verify if the Cylinder 5 injector solenoid is electrically responsive
Check for related companion codes (such as ENG 3310 or ENG 3402) that might isolate the issue
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery before servicing the high-pressure fuel system or ECU wiring.
Resolve Overpressure
If diagnostics prove the rail pressure is genuinely too high across the entire system, replace the faulty fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump or the faulty rail pressure sensor.
Access the Injector
If the issue is isolated to Cylinder 5, remove the engine valve cover (required on many FPT engines where injectors are located under the cover) to access the injector and internal harness.
Repair/Replace Harness
If the internal injector wiring harness shows signs of oil intrusion, melting, or chafing, replace the harness.
Replace Cylinder 5 Injector
If the wiring is intact and the injector has failed mechanically or electrically, remove and replace the Cylinder 5 fuel injector.
Reassemble and Bleed
Install a new valve cover gasket, reassemble the components, and bleed the fuel system according to the OEM manual.
Program the ECU
Use the CNH diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. If the injector was replaced, you must enter the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the Engine ECU to ensure proper fueling.
