New Holland ENG 3312 – Engine ECU (EDC7 / CNH EDC Tier 3 and Tier 4a): Cylinder 6 Specific Errors - Signal Low
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally low electrical signal voltage on the circuit for the Cylinder 6 fuel injector. This condition is typically caused by a short to ground in the engine wiring harness or an internal electrical short within the Cylinder 6 fuel injector solenoid itself.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- New Holland T8.xxx Series Tractors
- New Holland CR9090 Elevation Tier 4A Combine
- New Holland CX8080 Elevation Tier 4A Combine
- New Holland CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A Combine
Check the cause
Check for Associated Codes: Verify if codes 3313 or 3314 are also active, which further confirms a mechanical or electrical failure at the Cylinder 6 injector.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 6 fuel injector. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or bare wires that could be shorting to the engine block (ground).
Connector Check: Disconnect the Cylinder 6 injector connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Do the same at the ECU connector.
Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the Cylinder 6 injector solenoid pins. Compare the reading to a known good injector (e.g., Cylinder 5). A significantly lower resistance reading indicates an internal short in the injector.
Continuity Test: With the battery disconnected, test the injector signal wire for continuity to ground. If continuity exists while the injector is unplugged, the harness is shorted and must be repaired.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the machine's battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Clean injector area
Clean the area around the Cylinder 6 fuel injector to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Disconnect electrical connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 6 injector.
Remove high-pressure fuel line
Remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the Cylinder 6 injector. Cap both the rail fitting and the injector inlet immediately to prevent contamination.
Remove hold-down clamp
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt.
Extract injector
Carefully extract the faulty Cylinder 6 injector from the cylinder head.
Clean injector bore
Clean the injector bore thoroughly, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and not stuck at the bottom of the bore.
Install new injector
Install the new fuel injector, ensuring it is fitted with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.
Reinstall hold-down clamp
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the OEM specification.
Reconnect fuel line
Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and tighten to spec.
Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reconnect battery and clear codes
Reconnect the battery, prime/bleed the fuel system as per the operator's manual, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3312 fault code.
Test engine operation
Start the engine and check for fuel leaks and smooth operation.
