New Holland ENG 3315 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Minimum Number of Injections Not Reached - Stop Engine

Issue description

Indicates a critical failure within the Common Rail fuel injection system where the engine control system cannot maintain the required minimum fuel delivery to the cylinders. This is almost always caused by a severe drop in common rail fuel pressure, fuel starvation, or a malfunctioning fuel metering unit, resulting in an automatic engine shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Low-Pressure Fuel Supply Test: Check the vacuum between the inlet of the low-pressure lift pump and the fuel tank; it should not exceed 127 mm (5 inches) of Hg.

  2. Supply Pressure Test: Verify that the fuel supply pressure between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure pump is at a minimum of 5 bar (72 psi) with the engine loaded or unloaded.

  3. Visual Leak Inspection: Inspect the entire high-pressure system (common rail, injector lines, and fuel pressure relief valve) for any external or internal fuel leaks.

  4. Component Wiring Checks: Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors going to the EDC, the fuel metering unit (M-Prop), and the rail pressure sensor for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

  5. Filter Inspection: Check all fuel filters and water separators for severe restrictions or blockages.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Restrictions

    If the low-pressure vacuum test fails, replace the fuel filters and clear any blockages in the fuel lines between the tank and the lift pump.

  2. Repair Leaks

    Fix any identified leaks in the low-pressure or high-pressure fuel lines.

  3. Test/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

    If supply pressure is good but rail pressure drops erratically, the fuel metering unit (which regulates fuel entering the high-pressure pump) is likely failing and must be replaced.

  4. Test/Replace the Pressure Relief Valve

    If the rail pressure relief valve is popping open prematurely and dumping pressure back to the tank, replace the valve.

  5. Clear and Verify

    After repairs, use the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Test run the engine under load to verify that the actual rail pressure matches the ECU's setpoint and that the engine no longer shuts down.
