ENG 3316

New Holland ENG 3316 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Minimum Number of Injections Not Reached - Stop Engine

Issue description

This is a Level 2 Monitoring diagnosis fault indicating that the engine control system has detected that the fuel injection system is failing to deliver the minimum required number of fuel injections to sustain proper combustion and engine operation, forcing an automatic engine shutdown.

Applies to these machines

  • T7 series
  • T8 series
  • T9 series
  • B110B
  • W170B
  • W190B
  • CR series
  • CX series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090

Check the cause

  1. Test the low-pressure fuel pump using a 0 to 11 Bar (0 to 160 PSI) gauge and hose assembly to ensure a good supply line to the high-pressure system.

  2. Check for loose contacts or wiring harness issues between the fuel metering unit and the Engine ECU.

  3. Inspect the injector cables for short circuits (either low side to battery or high side to ground), which can interrupt injection cycles.

  4. Verify that the injector IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) programming is correct for the cylinders in the ECU.

  5. Check if the number of injections is being limited by the quantity balance of the high-pressure pump.

Repair steps

  1. Safety & Prep

Disconnect all electronic central units and remove the power cable from the battery's positive terminal before beginning major fuel system repairs or any welding.

  2. Resolve Wiring Faults

If diagnostic checks reveal a short circuit or loose contact at the fuel metering unit or injector harness, repair or replace the affected wiring harness.

  3. Replace the High-Pressure Pump

If the low-pressure supply is good but the high-pressure pump assembly is responsible for the limited quantity balance, the high-pressure pump must be replaced.

  4. Injector Replacement & Seating

If an injector is found to be faulty and requires replacement, ensure the injector protrusion is strictly between 0.52 mm and 1.34 mm.

  5. Regrind Injector Seat

If the protrusion is out of spec or the seat is damaged, use a milling cutter tool (OEM tool 99394043) to regrind the injector seat in the case.

  6. Reprogramming

If new injectors are installed, input the new IMA codes into the Engine ECU using the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool).
