Issue description

This code indicates a critical failure in the fuel delivery system where the engine is not receiving the minimum required fuel injections to maintain operation, prompting an automatic engine shutdown or stop command to prevent damage. It is typically caused by severe fuel starvation, loss of fuel pressure, or a failure in the fuel metering unit.

Check the cause

  1. Measure the vacuum between the inlet of the low-pressure fuel pump and the fuel tank. The vacuum should not exceed 127 mm (5 inches) of Hg.

  2. Check the fuel supply pressures between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure pump. The pressure must be a minimum of 5 bar (72 psi) regardless of whether the engine is loaded or unloaded.

  3. Check the Water in Fuel sensor data to see if water needs to be drained from the fuel filter, as contamination can restrict flow.

  4. Inspect the common fuel rail, fuel rail pressure sensor, fuel pressure relief valve, fuel injectors, and all necessary lines and connections for leaks or blockages.

Repair steps

  1. Drain/Replace Filters

    If water or heavy contamination is present, drain the water separator. Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters to ensure there are no flow restrictions causing the pressure drop.

  2. Test Fuel Lines

    Clear any blockages in the fuel lines between the tank and the low-pressure pump if the vacuum test exceeds 5 inches of Hg.

  3. Replace Lift Pump

    If the fuel supply pressure to the high-pressure pump is below 5 bar (72 psi) and the filters/lines are clear, replace the low-pressure fuel pump (lift pump).

  4. Replace High-Pressure Pump/Metering Unit

    If low-pressure supply is adequate (5 bar) but the rail pressure drops or the minimum injections are still not reached, the high-pressure fuel injection pump or its metering unit is likely failing and must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes

    After repairs, utilize the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to clear the fault memory from the EDC7 module.
