ENG 3318

New Holland ENG 3318 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Minimum Number of Injections Not Reached - Stop Engine

Issue description

A critical Level 2 monitoring fault where the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the common rail fuel injection system cannot achieve the minimum required number of injections per cycle to maintain engine operation. The ECU forces an immediate engine shutdown to prevent catastrophic damage. This is typically caused by a severe drop in common rail fuel pressure, a massive fuel leak, a faulty fuel metering unit, a failed high-pressure fuel pump, or a severe electrical short in the injector harness.

Check the cause

  1. Low-Pressure Fuel Supply Test: Check the lift pump, fuel filters, and lines for restrictions or air leaks. Vacuum should not exceed 5 inches of Hg and supply pressure should be a minimum of 5 bar.

  2. High-Pressure System & PRV Check: Check the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the common rail to see if it is popping open prematurely or leaking fuel into the return line at idle/cranking.

  3. Injector Leak-Off Test: Perform a return flow (leak-off) test to identify if a specific injector is stuck open and bypassing excessive fuel.

  4. Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the injector wiring harness for short circuits to ground or the battery.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Low-Pressure Restrictions

Replace the primary and secondary fuel filters/water separators. Bleed the low-pressure fuel system to ensure no air is trapped in the lines.

  2. Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

If the PRV failed the leak test (bypassing fuel when it should be closed), relieve system pressure and replace the valve on the common rail.

  3. Repair Wiring Shorts

If diagnostic tests reveal an electrical short, remove the valve cover (if the harness is internal) and inspect the injector harness for chafing or melted wires. Repair or replace the damaged harness sections.

  4. Replace Faulty Injectors

If the leak-off test isolates a bad injector, remove the high-pressure lines, extract the faulty injector, clean the injector cup, and install a new injector with new sealing rings/washers.

  5. Address the High-Pressure Pump / Metering Unit

If the low-pressure supply is good, injectors are not leaking, and the PRV is holding, the Fuel Metering Unit (M-PROP) or the High-Pressure Pump (CP3) itself has likely failed and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and verify that rail pressure reaches the target setpoint during cranking.
