New Holland ENG 3322 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message ERC1DR

Issue description

The expected Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication frame from the Electronic Retarder Controller #1 (ERC1) has not been received by the engine control system within the programmed time limit. When this timeout occurs, the system cannot verify the status or commands of the electronic retarder/engine brake, which usually results in the system disabling the retarder function for safety.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., ETC1, EBC1, TCO1) to determine if it is a global CAN bus failure or an isolated retarder controller issue.

  2. Verify module power and ground by checking the fuses, power supply, and ground circuits feeding the Electronic Retarder Controller.

  3. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected; measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (should be approximately 60 ohms).

  4. Visually inspect the twisted-pair CAN wiring between the Engine ECU and the Retarder Controller for chafing, corrosion, or pin push-out at the connectors.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the modules.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the Electronic Retarder Controller and the Engine ECU. Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules. Inspect the pins for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent terminals. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  3. Test CAN Wiring Continuity

    Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the Retarder Controller and the Engine ECU. Repair any broken wires using proper twisted-pair repair techniques.

  4. Test for Shorts

    Check for continuity between CAN High and ground, CAN Low and ground, and between the two CAN wires themselves. Repair any shorts found in the harness.

  5. Check Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance was abnormal during diagnostics, locate and test the CAN bus terminating resistors in the harness. Replace if they do not measure 120 ohms individually.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  7. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

    Start the machine and test the retarder function. If the wiring, power, and grounds are perfect but the ENG 3322 code immediately returns, the Electronic Retarder Controller has likely suffered an internal CAN transceiver failure and must be replaced and programmed.
