New Holland ENG 3323 – Engine: Timeout of CAN Message RxAMCONIv (Ambient Conditions)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication or timed out while waiting to receive the CAN bus message containing ambient condition data (such as ambient air temperature or barometric pressure) from another control module on the network, typically the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) or the Cab Controller.

   Scan for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., 3324, 3325/3326) to determine if the issue is a broader CAN bus network failure rather than an isolated sensor issue

   Monitor the 'Ambient Temperature' SAE J1939 CAN receive signal using a diagnostic tool to see if it reads 'not in range', 'erroneous signal', or 'not available'

   Inspect the CAN bus communication lines (CAN High / CAN Low) between the Engine ECU and the DCU/Cab controller for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins

   Locate the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor and inspect its pigtail connector and wiring harness for damage

   Perform a network resistance test with batteries disconnected to ensure the CAN bus reads approximately 60 ohms, verifying terminating resistor integrity

   Document fault codes

   Connect your diagnostic scanner and document all active and stored fault codes.

   Check for related sensor codes

   If ENG 3323 is accompanied by code P0071 (Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Range/Performance) or similar sensor-specific codes, the fault likely lies with the sensor itself or its immediate wiring.

   Inspect sensor connector

   Disconnect the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor and inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Test wiring continuity

   Test the wiring continuity from the sensor connector back to the DCU/ECU harness. Repair any open or shorted wires found in the harness.

   Replace Ambient Air Temperature Sensor

   If the wiring and CAN bus network are intact but the ambient condition data is still missing or reading out of range, replace the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor.

   Clear fault codes

   Reconnect all modules, turn the key on, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes.

   Verify repair

   Run the engine and verify that the ambient temperature data is now broadcasting correctly on the CAN network and that code ENG 3323 does not return.
