New Holland ENG 3324 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message EBC1 (Electronic Brake Switch)
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication with the Electronic Brake Controller or the module responsible for broadcasting the EBC1 CAN message. The ECM expects to receive regular updates over the CAN bus regarding the brake status (e.g., ABS active status, ASR engine active status). When this message is not received within the expected timeframe, the system logs a timeout error.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes (e.g., ENG 3325, ENG 3327) to determine if multiple modules are timing out, which indicates a central CAN bus failure, broken terminating resistor, or main power/ground issue rather than a failed brake switch.
Verify battery and voltage by load-testing the battery and measuring voltage during cranking (must stay above 10.5V). Verify alternator output, as low voltage causes ECU resets and communication drops.
Inspect grounds, including frame grounds, engine block ground strap, and battery negative connections for corrosion or high resistance.
Inspect harness connectors at the Electronic Brake Switch and the Engine ECU for moisture, corrosion, or broken wires inside the insulation.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if ENG 3324 is an active or stored (historical) code.
Test the Power Supply
Ensure the battery is fully charged and the charging system is operating correctly. Clean and tighten all battery and chassis ground terminals.
Inspect the Switch and Wiring
Locate the Electronic Brake Switch (usually linked to the parking brake or main brake pedal assembly). Disconnect the switch and inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-out terminals.
Test the CAN Bus
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. It should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a broken wire or a failed terminating resistor on the network.
Test/Replace the Switch
If the wiring, voltage, and CAN network integrity are all good, the Electronic Brake Switch itself (or its internal CAN broadcasting node) has likely failed and must be replaced.
Clear and Verify
Install the new switch, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and test-drive the tractor/combine to ensure the EBC1 message is broadcasting and the code does not return.
