New Holland ENG 3325 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Timeout of CAN Message ETC1 (Transmission)

A communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the Engine Control Module (ECM) fails to receive a continuous stream of data packets (ETC1) from the transmission within the programmed time window.

   Verify the machine's battery voltage and the specific power/ground circuits feeding the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

   Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across CAN High and CAN Low wires (should read 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a broken resistor or harness break).

   Visually inspect the main connectors at both the Engine ECU and the Transmission ECU for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs on the CAN bus to prevent module damage.

   Isolate the Break

   If the resistance test yielded 120 ohms (or an open circuit), trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the Transmission ECU. Pay special attention to areas where the harness bends, rubs against the chassis, or passes near hot engine components.

   Repair the Wiring

   If a broken or chafed wire is found, repair it. Maintain the original wire length and the twisted-pair configuration to prevent electronic interference (noise). Solder and heat-shrink the connection; do not use cheap crimp connectors on CAN lines.

   Check/Replace Terminators

   If the wiring is intact but resistance is wrong, locate the CAN terminating resistors (often located at the far ends of the harness or built into a dummy plug) and replace them if faulty.

   Test the TCM

   If the CAN bus wiring and resistors are perfectly intact (60 ohms), check if the Transmission ECU is receiving switched ignition power. If it has power and ground but still won't communicate, the Transmission ECU itself has likely failed and requires replacement.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) to clear the ENG 3325 code and perform a test drive to ensure the ETC1 message is broadcasting properly.
