New Holland ENG 3328 – Engine Controller (ENG): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AR (When Inactive)

Issue description

Indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure. The Engine Control Unit is expecting to receive a specific data message known as 'TSC1-AR' (Torque Speed Control 1 - Armrest) from the armrest controller. When the system is in an inactive state and this message is not received within the expected time limit, the ECU logs a timeout error.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes indicating CAN bus or controller errors (e.g., Arm Rest Module missing or Bus off) which point to a broader network failure.

  2. Verify the Armrest Controller (ARU) in the cab is receiving proper power and ground.

  3. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the machine off and battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low).

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the cab (armrest) and the Engine ECU for chafing, pinch points, or melted wires.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the Engine ECU and the Armrest Controller. Disconnect the harness connectors at both ends. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Clean Contacts

    If mild corrosion is found, clean the pins with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Test Harness Continuity

    Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the armrest connector to the engine ECU connector. Also, test these wires for a short to ground or a short to voltage.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If an open circuit or short is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected connector pins.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 3328 code.

  7. Module Update/Replacement

    If the wiring is perfectly intact, the connectors are clean, and the code immediately returns upon startup, the Armrest Controller or the Engine ECU may be suffering from an internal hardware failure or require a software re-flash by a certified dealer.
