New Holland ENG 3329 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AR (When Active)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) expects to receive a continuous stream of data (such as throttle position or torque requests) from the Armrest Module via the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. When the system is active, if the ECM fails to receive this specific message within the programmed time limit, it logs code 3329 to indicate a communication timeout.

   Check for accompanying CAN bus codes (e.g., 14904 'Arm Rest Module missing' or 18001-18004). Multiple modules dropping offline indicates a main CAN bus short.

   Inspect the Multi-Function Handle (MFH) / CommandGrip to ensure the hand throttle and multi-function handle are functioning.

   Inspect the main cab-to-engine wiring harness for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins at the bulk-head connectors, Armrest Module connector, and Engine ECU connector.

   Perform a CAN Bus Network Test: With battery disconnected, measure resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms).

   Verify that the Armrest Module is receiving proper voltage and has a clean ground connection to rule out voltage drops.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

   Clean and Secure Connections

   Disconnect the harnesses at the Armrest Module and the Engine ECU. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply a light coat of dielectric grease, and firmly reconnect them.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If continuity tests reveal a break or high resistance in the CAN High or CAN Low wires between the cab and the engine, splice and repair the damaged section of the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

   Module Software Flash

   If the wiring is perfectly intact, the Armrest Module or Engine ECU may be experiencing a software glitch. A dealer technician should connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for and apply any available software updates for the ARU and ECM.

   Replace the Faulty Component

   If software updates and wiring repairs do not resolve the timeout, the Armrest Module (or the Multi-Function Handle sending the base signal) has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3329 fault code, and test-operate the machine's throttle and armrest controls to ensure the code does not return.
