ENG 3330

New Holland ENG 3330 – Engine Controller / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DE (When Inactive)

Issue description

Network-level communication disruption on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) failed to receive the expected Torque Speed Control (TSC1-DE) message from the main communication system within the allotted time limit.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: With ignition OFF, measure resistance at the diagnostic port between CAN High (yellow wire) and CAN Low (green wire). It should be approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a missing/broken terminating resistor or an open circuit.

  2. Perform a Voltage and Battery Load Test: Ensure voltage stays above 10.5V during cranking, as low or unstable voltage causes ECU resets and CAN communication timeouts.

  3. Inspect grounds for high resistance, specifically checking frame grounds, the engine block ground strap, and battery negative connections.

  4. Inspect connectors at the ECU, Advanced Instrument Cluster (AIC), and Transmission Controller (TCM) for loose wires, backed-out pins, moisture intrusion, or corrosion.

  5. Check diagnostic power fuses (e.g., F9 10A fuse in the ECC panel) to ensure they are not blown.

Repair steps

  1. Verify the Fault

    Confirm the fault is currently active using a diagnostic tool (like the New Holland Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest).

  2. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery negative terminal before servicing the wiring.

  3. Locate the Break/Failure

    Based on the resistance test (if it read 120 ohms), locate the two terminating resistors at the extreme ends of the CAN bus network.

  4. Test/Replace Terminating Resistors

    Unplug and test the terminating resistors individually. They should each read 120 ohms. If one reads open (infinite resistance) or is physically damaged, replace it.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If the resistors are good but the circuit is open, trace the yellow (CAN HI) and green (CAN LO) twisted pair wires. Repair any chafed, broken, or corroded sections of the wiring harness.

  6. Clean Grounds

    Remove, clean, and re-secure the main engine and cab ground straps.

  7. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use your diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU.

  8. Retest

    Run the machine to verify that CAN communication is restored and the ENG 3330 code does not return.
