New Holland ENG 3331 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DE (When Active)

Issue description

The Engine controller expects to receive the active TSC1-DE command message from the Driven Equipment controller, but the message times out (is not received within the programmed millisecond threshold). This usually indicates a physical wiring issue on the CAN bus, a failed terminating resistor, or a loss of power/function to the sending module.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes related to the Transmission, PTO, or Armrest modules, which could indicate a loss of power to the Driven Equipment controller.

  2. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test at the diagnostic port with the battery disconnected (should read approx 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a failed/missing terminating resistor or open circuit).

  3. Visually inspect the main wiring harnesses connecting the Engine ECU to the cab and chassis controllers for rub-throughs, pinch points, or damage.

  4. Check the Engine ECU connectors for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Locate the Engine ECU. Carefully disconnect the main harness connectors. Inspect the pins for green corrosion or moisture. Clean thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner and apply a light amount of dielectric grease.

  3. Trace the CAN Lines

    Using a multimeter and the machine's specific wiring schematic, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the Engine ECU to the Driven Equipment controller.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If you find a break, short to ground, or short to voltage in the twisted-pair CAN wires, cut out the damaged section. Solder in a new section of twisted-pair wire and seal it with marine-grade (adhesive-lined) heat shrink tubing.

  5. Check Module Power/Ground

    If the CAN wiring is perfectly intact, verify that the Driven Equipment controller is receiving proper 12V power and has a clean ground. A module with a weak ground will fail to broadcast its CAN messages.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. Run the machine and engage the driven equipment (e.g., PTO or transmission) to verify the code does not return.

  7. Software/Hardware Replacement

    If the wiring is flawless and the code persists, the sending controller or the Engine ECU may have an internal CAN transceiver failure requiring module replacement or a software re-flash by a dealer.
