New Holland ENG 3332 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DR (When Inactive)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) did not receive the expected Controller Area Network (CAN) communication message from the vehicle/transmission controller within the allotted time limit while the system was in an inactive state.

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple CAN Bus fault codes to determine if the entire network is affected rather than a single module

  2. Verify battery voltage, as low voltage can disable power stage diagnosis and cause CAN timeouts

  3. Test CAN bus resistance with the battery disconnected (should measure exactly 60 ohms between CAN HI and CAN LO)

  4. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Control Module for chafing, rodent damage, or corrosion at the connector blocks

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and completely disconnect the battery.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Control Module. Disconnect the CAN bus harness connectors at both ends. Inspect the pins and terminals for any signs of corrosion, moisture, or pushed pins. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

  3. Test Wiring Continuity

    Perform a continuity test on the CAN HI and CAN LO wires from the ECU to the Vehicle Controller. Repair any broken wires.

  4. Test for Shorts

    Check for shorts to ground or shorts to power on the CAN lines using a multimeter.

  5. Check Terminating Resistors

    If the overall bus resistance is not 60 ohms, locate the terminating resistors (often located near the extremities of the harness or plugged into a diagnostic hub) and test them individually. Replace any resistor that does not read 120 ohms.

  6. Clear and Retest

    If the wiring and terminating resistors are intact, reconnect the modules. It is normal for CAN faults to log temporarily during voltage drops or module programming. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and retest the system.

  7. Module Replacement

    If the fault persists after wiring and resistor repairs, the issue may lie internally within the transmitting Vehicle Controller or the receiving Engine ECU, requiring a software update or module replacement.
