New Holland ENG 3333 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DR (When Active)
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has stopped receiving the expected TSC1-DR (Torque Speed Control 1 - Driveline/Transmission) CAN bus message from the vehicle controller within the required timeframe while the system is active. This is a communication failure indicating that the engine is not receiving driveline torque commands over the CAN network.

Check the cause
Verify if other CAN timeout codes are present (e.g., 3334 for TSC1-PE, 3336 for TSC1-TR, or 3338 for TSC1-VE) to rule out a broader CAN bus failure
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle controller for chafing, breaks, or corrosion, and check connector pins
Measure the resistance of the CAN bus network to ensure terminating resistors are intact (typically around 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low with battery disconnected)
Ensure the Engine ECU and the transmitting vehicle controller have proper power and ground supplies to prevent voltage drops that disrupt CAN communication
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery before working on the electrical system to prevent short circuits.
Inspect and Clean Connectors
Disconnect the harness connectors at the Engine ECU and the vehicle controller. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent, corroded, or pushed back into the housing.
Test Harness Continuity
Using a digital multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the vehicle controller. Repair any open circuits or high-resistance areas.
Test for Shorts
Test the CAN wires for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or shorts to each other. Repair the harness as necessary.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect all connectors, reconnect the battery, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault codes.
Test Operation
Start the machine and operate it to see if the fault code returns. If the wiring is verified good and the code persists, the issue may lie internally within the Engine ECU or the transmitting vehicle controller, requiring module replacement or reprogramming.
