New Holland ENG 3334 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: CAN Bus Communication: Timed Out of CAN message TSC1-PE Torque (When Active)

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) did not receive the expected Controller Area Network (CAN) message "TSC1-PE" (Torque/Speed Control #1 from Power Take Off to Engine) from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or main communication system within the allotted time limit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Status: Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault code is currently active or stored in history.

  2. Check CAN Bus Resistance: The CAN network consists of a twisted pair of wires: CAN HI (yellow) and CAN LO (green). With the machine powered off, measure the resistance between these two wires. Because there is a 120-ohm terminating resistor at each end of the network, the multimeter should read exactly 60 ohms.

  3. Identify Missing Terminators: If the resistance reads 120 ohms, it means one of the terminating resistors is missing, broken, or has a failed connection.

  4. Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Check the CAN bus cabling for Bus scheduling errors, reversed polarity, short circuits, or power interrupts. Ensure all chassis and module ground connections are clean and tight, as bad grounds frequently cause CAN timeouts.

  5. Check for VCM Faults: Look for other active codes indicating that the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Instrument Cluster has failed or lost power, as the ECM cannot receive messages if the sending module is offline.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to safely test the CAN network.

  2. Test the Terminating Resistors

    Locate the CAN terminating resistors (often located at the far ends of the harness; sometimes one is a standalone plug and the other is built into the ECU/VCM). If your earlier multimeter test showed 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms, replace the faulty terminating resistor plug.

  3. Inspect the Harness

    Visually inspect the engine CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the VCM. Look for chafed wires, broken solder joints at the connectors, or corrosion. Repair any damaged sections of the yellow (CAN HI) and green (CAN LO) wires.

  4. Clean Grounds

    Remove, wire-brush, and re-secure the main earth straps and ECU ground pins.

  5. Retest

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and cycle the key. If the code returns immediately, the issue is a hard failure in either the Engine ECM or the VCM, requiring module replacement and reprogramming.
