ENG 3334

New Holland ENG 3334 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Timeout of CAN message TSC1-PE Torque (When Active) or CAN Bus Open Related to TSC1 Message

Issue description

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The Engine Control Module is not receiving the expected Torque Speed Control 1 (TSC1) data message from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Transmission Controller within the required timeframe.

Check the cause

  1. Check for programming artifacts if the machine was recently flashed or calibrated

  2. Check for multiple CAN codes which would indicate a physical problem with the entire CAN bus circuit

  3. Inspect wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU and Vehicle Controller for loose pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion

  4. Measure CAN Bus resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

    Clear the ENG 3334 fault code using a diagnostic tool and cycle the key. If the code does not return, it may have been a transient communication glitch or programming artifact.

  2. Isolate the Harness

    If the code is active, disconnect the battery and isolate the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Controller.

  3. Test Wiring Continuity

    Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires to check for open circuits. Test the wires against the machine chassis to ensure they are not shorted to ground.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors

    Locate the CAN bus terminating resistors on the network. Unplug them and test their resistance; each should read exactly 120 ohms. Replace any resistor that reads open or out of specification.

  5. Repair/Replace Harness

    If a break, chafe, or short is found in the CAN wiring, repair the damaged section or replace the affected CAN-bus wire harness.

  6. Controller Diagnosis

    If the wiring harness and terminating resistors are perfectly intact, the fault lies with the Vehicle Controller failing to broadcast the TSC1 message. The VCM will need to be tested, reprogrammed, or replaced by an authorized dealer.
