New Holland ENG 3336 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-TR (When Inactive)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) failed to receive a specific Controller Area Network (CAN) message (Torque/Speed Control #1 from Traction Control to Retarder) within the allotted time limit, indicating a communication breakdown on the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the fault is currently active or stored in history (it is normal to log CAN fault codes while a control module is being programmed)

  2. With the machine powered off, measure the resistance between the CAN HI (yellow) and CAN LO (green) wires. A healthy CAN bus will read exactly 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a missing or failed terminating resistor, or a break in the wiring harness

  3. Inspect the CAN line connections to the transmission controller, central controller, and engine ECU for backed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while testing.

  2. Locate the Terminating Resistors

    Consult your specific machine's electrical schematic to find the two CAN bus terminating resistors (often located near the ECU and at the far end of the chassis/cab harness).

  3. Test the Resistors

    Unplug the terminating resistors and test them individually with a multimeter. They should each read 120 ohms. If one reads open (infinite resistance) or is physically damaged, it must be replaced.

  4. Trace the Wiring Harness

    If the resistors are good, trace the yellow (CAN HI) and green (CAN LO) twisted wires between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Traction controller. Look for Y-splitters, Y-connectors, or harness Y-joints that are prone to chafing or broken solder joints.

  5. Repair the Harness

    Repair any broken wires or Y-joints using proper CAN bus wiring repair sections (maintaining the twisted pair configuration to prevent electromagnetic interference).

  6. Clear Codes and Retest

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, clear the fault codes from the modules using a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST), and retest the system to ensure the TSC1-TR message is successfully received.
