ENG 3338

New Holland ENG 3338 – ENGINE: CAN Bus Communication: CAN message not received from Vehicle Controller (TSC1_VE Message passive)

Issue description

Communication timeout where the Engine Control Module (ECM) is no longer receiving the expected TSC1_VE (Torque/Speed Control) messages over the CAN bus from the main Vehicle Controller.

Applies to these machines

  • F5C engines
  • F5H engines
  • Skid Steer Loaders
  • Compact Track Loaders
  • Backhoe Loaders
  • L220
  • SR175
  • B90B
  • B100B

Check the cause

  1. Check for programming anomalies: If a module was recently flashed or programmed, clear the fault codes and retest the system before assuming a hard failure

  2. Check for multiple CAN codes: If multiple CAN Bus fault codes are present, the issue is likely a broader network problem requiring inspection of the entire CAN bus circuit

  3. Verify active status: Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that the fault code is currently active

  4. Isolate the failure mode: The underlying cause is typically an open or shorted wire in the CAN system, a failure of the Instrument Cluster / Vehicle Controller, or a failure of the Engine ECM

Repair steps

  1. Clear fault codes and retest

Connect the diagnostic service tool and clear the fault codes. Cycle the key and retest the system to see if ENG 3338 returns as an active code.

  2. Inspect CAN bus wiring harness

If the code is active, perform a visual and multimeter inspection of the CAN bus wiring harness between the Vehicle Controller and the Engine ECM. Look for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  3. Inspect harness connectors

Disconnect the harness connectors at the Vehicle Controller and the Engine ECM. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or poor terminal tension.

  4. Repair wiring or connectors

Repair any damaged wiring or connectors found in the CAN circuit.

  5. Diagnose and replace faulty module

If the wiring harness and connectors test good, the fault lies within one of the modules. Diagnose the Vehicle Controller (or Instrument Cluster) and the Engine ECM to determine which module is failing to transmit/receive the TSC1_VE message, and replace the faulty module.
