ENG 3339

New Holland ENG 3339 – ENGINE: CAN Bus Communication: Timed Out of CAN message TSC1-VE Speed (When Active)

Issue description

This fault indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) did not receive the expected TSC1-VE (Torque Speed Control - Vehicle/Speed) message from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Transmission Control Module within the required timeframe while a speed/torque request was actively being commanded.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN fault codes (such as 3338, 3358, or VCM offline codes) which indicate the entire CAN bus circuit is compromised.

  2. Verify if the machine was recently programmed, as flashing modules normally logs CAN codes. Clear codes and retest if so.

  3. Perform a CAN Bus resistance test with battery disconnected (should read exactly 60 ohms).

  4. Inspect the CAN wiring harness between the Engine ECU and VCM/Transmission controller for chafed wires, loose pins, or moisture.

  5. Verify battery and charging system voltage, as abnormal voltage can disrupt CAN communication.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Isolate the Harness

    Disconnect the main harness connectors at the Engine ECU and the VCM.

  3. Continuity and Short Testing

    Test the CAN HI and CAN LOW wires for continuity from end to end. Test for a short to ground (check resistance between CAN wires and the chassis). Test for a short to power (check resistance between CAN wires and the battery positive terminal).

  4. Repair Wiring

    If a break, short, or high resistance is found, repair the damaged section of the twisted-pair CAN wiring or replace the affected harness segment. Ensure any repaired CAN wires remain twisted to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  5. Clean Connectors

    If the wiring tests good, inspect the ECU and VCM connector pins. Use electrical contact cleaner to remove any corrosion and ensure pin drag/tension is tight.

  6. Module Replacement (Last Resort)

    If the wiring harness is perfectly intact, termination resistance is 60 ohms, and the VCM is verified to be broadcasting properly, the Engine ECU's internal CAN transceiver may have failed, requiring ECU replacement and reprogramming.

  7. Clear and Retest

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Clear the inactive fault codes using an electronic service tool and operate the machine to verify the TSC1-VE message is being received and the code does not return.
