New Holland ENG 3340 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Timeout of CAN Message Time Date

This is a communication error indicating that the Engine Control Module has not received the expected Time and Date data packet over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus within the required timeframe.

   Check for accompanying codes using a diagnostic tool to see if ENG 3340 is isolated or if there are other CAN timeout codes (such as 3341 or 3323) indicating a broader CAN bus failure.

   Verify battery voltage and inspect the main ground straps for the Engine ECU and the Cab/Vehicle Control Module, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the CAN bus.

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the VCM/Instrument Cluster for chafed wires, corrosion, or pushed-back pins in the connectors.

   Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASy) to ping the module responsible for broadcasting the time/date to ensure it is online and communicating.

   Connect diagnostic tool

   Connect the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port and retrieve all active and stored DTCs.

   Verify VCM settings

   If ENG 3340 is the only active code, navigate to the VCM or Instrument Cluster settings and verify that the system time and date are properly set and that the module is configured to broadcast.

   Perform CAN bus resistance test

   Disconnect the battery and perform a CAN bus resistance test at the Engine ECU connector. Measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low; a healthy CAN backbone should read approximately 60 ohms.

   Trace and repair CAN wiring

   If the resistance is out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms or open circuit), trace the CAN wiring harness back to the cab to locate the break or faulty terminating resistor. Repair any damaged wiring or replace faulty connector pins.

   If the wiring is intact and resistance is correct, check for available software updates for the VCM and Engine ECU. Software bugs in older firmware versions can sometimes cause message broadcast timeouts.

   Clear codes and test

   Clear the fault codes, cycle the ignition key, and run the engine. If the code returns immediately and all wiring tests perfectly, the module responsible for broadcasting the message may have an internal failure.
