New Holland ENG 3341 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message HRVD (High Resolution Vehicle Distance)

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication fault. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the CAN bus for specific data packets broadcasted by other modules. Code 3341 triggers when the ECU fails to receive the "HRVD" (High Resolution Vehicle Distance / Odometer) message within the expected timeframe. This indicates a network communication breakdown, an open/short in the CAN wiring, or a failure of the module responsible for broadcasting the distance data (typically the Body Controller, Instrument Cluster, or Tachograph).

Check the cause

  1. Check for Companion Codes: Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if other CAN timeout codes are present (e.g., ETC1, TCO1, AMCONIv). If multiple modules are timing out, the entire CAN bus is likely down. If only 3341 is present, the issue is isolated to the HRVD broadcasting module.

  2. Measure CAN Resistance (Key OFF): Disconnect the battery and measure the resistance between CAN HI and CAN LOW at the diagnostic port. It should read exactly 60 ohms. 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or a missing/failed terminating resistor. ~0 ohms indicates a short circuit in the CAN wiring.

  3. Verify Power and Grounds: Check the fuses, relays, and ground straps for the Body Controller / Instrument Cluster. If the sending module has no power, it cannot broadcast the HRVD message.

  4. Measure CAN Voltage (Key ON): Probe the CAN lines. CAN HI should fluctuate around 2.5V to 3.5V, and CAN LOW should fluctuate around 1.5V to 2.5V.

  5. Visual Inspection: Inspect the twisted-pair CAN wiring harness between the Cab/Body Controller and the Engine ECU for chafing, rodent damage, or pin corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

    Based on the resistance and voltage tests, locate the break or short in the CAN bus. Disconnect modules one by one; if the CAN voltage returns to normal after unplugging a specific module, that module is pulling the network down.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a broken wire or chafed insulation is found, repair the twisted-pair wiring. Ensure the twists are maintained as close to the repair as possible to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  3. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the harness at the Engine ECU and the Body Controller. Spray with electrical contact cleaner, check for pushed-back pins, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistor

    If the network resistance tested at 120 ohms and the wiring is intact, locate and replace the faulty 120-ohm CAN terminating resistor.

  5. Replace Broadcasting Module

    If wiring, power, grounds, and terminating resistors are all perfect, the module responsible for sending the HRVD message (Body Controller or Tachograph) has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect battery power, connect the New Holland EST, clear the inactive 3341 fault code, and test drive the machine to verify the odometer/distance data is registering and the code does not return.
