New Holland ENG 3353 – Engine ECU: Engine Brake Decompression Valve - Short circuit to Ground

The engine control module has detected a short to ground in the electrical circuit controlling the engine brake decompression valve (exhaust brake flap actuator). Voltage intended for the valve is escaping directly to the chassis/ground, which prevents the engine brake from engaging and can potentially blow related fuses or damage the control module.

   Trace the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Engine Brake Decompression Valve. Look for areas where the wire insulation may have rubbed through against the engine block, exhaust components, or chassis, causing a direct short to ground.

   Inspect Main Relay 4 (Engine Brake Exhaust Valve relay). A melted or internally shorted relay can trigger related circuit faults.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the valve and measure the resistance across the valve's solenoid pins (FPT technical data specifies a coil resistance of approximately 41.5 ± 2.2 Ω for some 2-pin valves).

   Using a multimeter, check for continuity between the valve's connector pins and the metal housing of the valve. If there is continuity, the solenoid is internally shorted to ground.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during repair.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the engine brake decompression valve/exhaust flap actuator, typically mounted near the exhaust manifold or turbocharger exhaust outlet.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire shorting to the block, repair the wire using automotive-grade solder and heat-shrink tubing, or replace that section of the engine harness. Route the harness away from high-heat exhaust components.

   Replace the Valve

   If internally shorted, disconnect the electrical connector from the valve, unbolt the valve assembly from its mounting point, clean the mating surface, install the new Engine Brake Decompression Valve using a new gasket/seal, and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical connector to the valve and reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or FPT EASY diagnostic tool to the machine, clear the ENG 3353 fault code, and run an engine brake actuation test to verify the repair.
