New Holland ENG 3357 – Engine ECU (EDC): Misfire in Multiple Cylinders - Too Many Misfires

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an excessive number of combustion misfires across more than one cylinder. This points to severe combustion irregularities usually caused by fuel injection timing issues, fuel pressure instability, poor fuel atomization, or loss of compression.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel water separator and tank for water, dirt, or algae.

  2. Check the condition of the primary and secondary fuel filters.

  3. Use a diagnostic tool to monitor high-pressure fuel pump stability (rail pressure) and individual cylinder contribution.

  4. Check for excessive injector return leakage.

  5. Inspect the injector wiring harnesses for chafing, shorts, or loose connections.

  6. Ensure the turbocharger and intake system are free of restrictions or leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Verify the Code

    Connect your diagnostic tool to confirm ENG 3357 is active. Look for accompanying codes (e.g., low rail pressure or specific cylinder electrical faults) that might narrow down the issue.

  2. Service the Fuel System

    Drain the fuel water separator. If contamination is found, flush the fuel lines and clean the tank.

  3. Replace Filters

    Replace both the primary fuel filter/water separator and the secondary fuel filter to rule out flow restrictions.

  4. Test Run & Monitor

    Clear the codes and run the engine under load. If the misfire persists, proceed to injector testing.

  5. Isolate Faulty Injectors

    Based on the cylinder contribution test and return flow test, identify which injectors are failing to atomize fuel properly or are leaking pressure back into the return system.

  6. Replace Injectors & Inspect Lines

    Replace the faulty fuel injectors. When replacing injectors, it is highly recommended to inspect and potentially replace the high-pressure fuel injection lines, as they can harbor debris or leak after being reseated.

  7. ECU Programming

    If new injectors are installed, program the new injector trim codes (IQA codes) into the Engine ECU using the diagnostic tool to ensure proper fueling calibration.

  8. Final Validation

    Clear all fault codes and perform a final test drive under working load to verify the misfire has been resolved.
