ENG 3358

New Holland ENG 3358 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN Bus Communication: Primary Vehicle or Engine CAN Bus Failure (Engine controller cannot transmit)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is not receiving or transmitting messages on the vehicle's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus within the allotted time limit.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series Tractors
  • T7 Series Tractors
  • T8 Series Tractors
  • T9 Series Tractors
  • L220
  • SR175
  • W190B
  • FR450
  • FR500
  • FR600

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm it is currently active. Clear codes and retest if the module was recently programmed.

  2. Check for multiple CAN Bus fault codes to determine if the entire CAN bus circuit needs evaluation.

  3. Visually inspect all connectors to the ECU and vehicle control modules for damage, proper seating, and broken locks.

  4. Measure CAN Bus resistance between the CAN HI and CAN LO wires with the battery disconnected (should yield approximately 60 ohms). If the resistance is less than 5 ohms, there is a short circuit; if 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors has failed or there is an open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If the visual inspection reveals chafed, broken, or shorted wires in the CAN HI (usually yellow) or CAN LO (usually green) lines, repair the damaged wiring and retest the circuit.

  2. Replace Connectors

If connector pins are pushed back, corroded, or the locking tabs are broken, replace the connector housings or pins to ensure a tight fit.

  3. Replace Terminating Resistors

If the CAN bus resistance test fails (and wiring is intact), locate and replace the faulty 120-ohm terminating resistor.

  4. Address Module Failure

If the wiring harness, connectors, and terminating resistors all test good, the failure is likely internal to a control module (typically the Instrument Cluster or the ECM). The ECU will need to be repaired by a specialist, cloned, or replaced and reprogrammed using the CNH EST.
