ENG 3359

New Holland ENG 3359 – Engine Control Module (ECM): TSC Demand Physically Implausible

Issue description

The Engine ECU receives a torque or speed demand that is physically implausible (mathematically invalid, corrupted, or falls completely outside the physical operating capabilities of the engine) from another controller.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated fault codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), specifically CAN bus timeout codes (e.g., ENG 3334-3339) or sensor faults on the transmission/armrest controllers.

  2. Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wiring between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle/Transmission controllers for chafed wires, corrosion in connectors, or loose pins.

  3. Check for mismatched or outdated software versions between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle controller.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Plug the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) into the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Address Root Cause Codes

If there are active codes for wheel speed sensors, transmission sensors, or armrest potentiometers, diagnose and repair those first.

  3. Test the CAN Bus

Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN bus network at the diagnostic connector (with the battery disconnected). It should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms or higher, there is an open circuit or a failed terminating resistor that must be repaired.

  4. Repair Wiring

If wiring damage or connector corrosion is found during the visual or multimeter inspection, repair the harness or replace the damaged pigtail connector.

  5. Flash/Update Software

If the wiring is intact and no other sensor codes are present, check the CNH eTIM portal for software updates. Flash the Engine ECU and the requesting controller (Transmission/Body controller) to the latest software versions.

  6. Clear and Test

Clear the fault codes using the EST. Start the machine and operate it under load to verify the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connector Pigtails

Generic - exact part number depends on the specific chassis and location of the wiring break

  • Terminating Resistor

Generic - if CAN resistance is out of spec

  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Generic - only if the module itself has an internal CAN transceiver failure, which is rare
