New Holland ENG 3369 – ENGINE ECU: Engine Protection: Torque limitation caused by smoke limitation
Issue description
Fault code ENG 3369 indicates that the engine is in a derated state because the ECU is actively limiting the fuel injection quantity to prevent excessive black smoke. The ECU calculates the maximum allowable fuel based on the current intake air mass and boost pressure; if there is a lack of air (due to a boost leak, restricted intake, or faulty sensor), the ECU cuts fuel to maintain the correct air-to-fuel ratio, resulting in a noticeable loss of power and torque.

Check the cause
Check for primary fault codes related to the MAP/Boost pressure sensor, EGR system, or air filter restriction (e.g., ENG 3390)
Inspect the primary and secondary air filters for severe clogging or debris
Perform a boost leak test using a workshop smoke tester or pressure test on the Charge Air Cooler (CAC), intake manifold, and turbocharger boots/hoses
Test the Boost Pressure / MAP sensor and inspect its wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or short circuits
Inspect the turbocharger to ensure it is operating correctly and is not worn or seized
Repair steps
Read and Record DTCs
Use a compatible diagnostic scanner to read all engine fault codes. Note any primary codes alongside ENG 3369.
Resolve Intake Restrictions
If the air filters are clogged, remove the housing cover, discard the old primary and secondary filters, wipe the housing clean, and install new filters.
Repair Boost Leaks
If your smoke/pressure test revealed a boost leak, replace any torn or degraded Charge Air Cooler (CAC) hoses/boots and tighten all T-bolt clamps to spec.
Replace Faulty Sensors
If a primary code points to the MAP/Boost Pressure sensor, disconnect the wiring harness, unbolt the sensor from the intake manifold, and install a new OEM sensor.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect your diagnostic tool, clear all stored and active fault codes, and test drive the machine under heavy load to verify that full torque is restored and the code does not return.
