ENG 3371

New Holland ENG 3371 – ENGINE ECU (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control module): Fuel Overheat: Temporary torque limitation due to high fuel temperature.

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the temperature of the diesel fuel has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold. Because hot fuel loses its viscosity and lubricity, the system automatically triggers a "temporary torque limitation" (engine derate) to protect the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors from catastrophic internal wear and damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check Fuel Level: Operating the machine with a very low fuel tank can cause this code. Fuel is used to cool the injectors, and the hot return fuel will rapidly heat up a nearly empty tank.

  2. Inspect Cooling Systems: Check the fuel cooler (if equipped) and the main radiator stack for debris, dust, or chaff blocking airflow.

  3. Check Fuel Return Lines: Inspect the fuel return lines for kinks or restrictions, which can trap hot fuel in the engine bay.

  4. Test the Fuel Temperature Sensor (SE2306): Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the sensor to see if it is reading out of range. OEM specs for the FPT sensor are: Approx. 1.9 kΩ at 20°C (68°F), Approx. 798 Ω at 40°C (104°F), Approx. 140 Ω at 90°C (194°F).

  5. Check the Wiring Harness: Verify the 5V reference supply cable and the signal line to the frame ground to ensure there are no shorts or open circuits in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Cool down machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the machine to cool down completely to avoid burns from hot fuel or engine components.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the fuel temperature sensor. On F5C/F5H engines, it is typically threaded into the fuel filter housing or positioned near the high-pressure pump metering unit.

  3. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for fuel spill

    Place a rag beneath the sensor to catch any residual fuel.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

    Using a 19mm spanner/wrench, unscrew and remove the faulty sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the housing (ensure the sealing washer or O-ring is in place) and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the wiring harness until the plug clicks into place.

  8. Prime system and check for leaks

    Turn the key to the ON position to prime the fuel system and check for leaks.

  9. Clear fault code

    Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine and clear the ENG 3371 fault code from the Engine ECU.
