New Holland ENG 3380 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Engine Fan Increase Speed Error (open or short circuit)

The engine controller is commanding the electronically controlled engine cooling fan to increase its speed to cool the engine, but the system detects an electrical anomaly. The underlying condition is either an open circuit or a short circuit in the fan control circuit.

   Inspect the electrical connector at the Vistronic fan drive/clutch for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture inside the plug.

   Trace the wiring harness from the fan clutch back to the Engine ECU. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or breaks that would cause an open or short circuit to ground.

   Using a multimeter, check the fan plug for proper ground, 12V power, and the 5V reference signal from the ECU (key on, engine off).

   Measure the internal resistance of the fan control solenoid / Vistronic drive. Infinite resistance indicates an internal open; zero resistance indicates an internal short, meaning the fan clutch has failed.

   Preparation

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical shorts.

   Access the Cooling Package

   Remove the engine side panels, hood, and any necessary framework to gain clear access to the radiator and engine cooling fan.

   Disconnect Electronics

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the engine fan clutch.

   Remove the Fan Assembly

   Unbolt the fan clutch assembly from its mounting point (often threaded directly onto the water pump hub or a dedicated fan pulley).

   Transfer Fan Blades

   If you are only replacing the central viscous drive/clutch, unbolt the plastic/composite fan blades from the old drive and transfer them to the new unit. Inspect the blades for cracks; replace them if damaged.

   Install the New Part

   Thread or bolt the new Vistronic fan drive assembly onto the engine hub.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new fan clutch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the fan shroud, hood, and side panels.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3380 fault code. Start the engine, bring it up to operating temperature, and verify that the fan engages properly and the code does not return.
