ENG 3381

New Holland ENG 3381 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Fan Decrease Speed Error (open or short circuit)

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine controller is commanding the electronically controlled viscous fan (Vistronic fan) to reduce its speed, but the system is detecting an electrical fault (an open circuit or a short circuit) in the fan control solenoid circuit, preventing the fan from responding correctly.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T6.140
  • T6.175
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • TM Series
  • TM120
  • TM130
  • TM175
  • TM190
  • CR Series
  • CR6090
  • CR7090
  • CR8080
  • CR9090
  • CX Series
  • CX8080
  • CX8090

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Vistronic fan clutch (the plug is often located near the engine valve cover). Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or backed-out pins.

  2. Circuit Testing: Disconnect the fan harness and use a multimeter to check for 12V power, the 5V reference signal, and a solid ground at the connector.

  3. Solenoid Resistance: Measure the resistance across the fan control solenoid pins on the fan hub itself to check for an internal open or short circuit.

  4. Diagnostic Tool Verification: Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) to actively command the fan speed and monitor the feedback to see if the circuit drops out under load.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector in the engine harness, repair the wiring using OEM-approved splice kits or replace the connector pigtail.

  3. Remove Fan Assembly

If the wiring tests perfectly, the internal solenoid of the Vistronic fan drive has failed. Remove the fan shroud and release the tension on the engine drive belt.

  4. Unbolt the Fan Hub

Unbolt the Vistronic fan clutch/hub from the water pump pulley.

  5. Transfer Fan Blades

Unbolt the plastic fan blades from the old Vistronic hub and transfer them to the new hub (inspect the blades for cracks; replace if necessary).

  6. Install New Hub

Thread the new Vistronic fan assembly onto the water pump and torque to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the drive belt, reconnect the electrical harness to the fan solenoid, and reinstall the fan shroud.

  8. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3381 fault code, and run the engine to operating temperature to verify the fan modulates correctly without throwing the code.
