ENG 3383

New Holland ENG 3383 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Fan Control Solenoid Open Or Short To GND

Issue description

The engine controller has detected an electrical issue (an open circuit or a short to ground) in the circuit that operates the fan control solenoid, which is responsible for engaging the Vistronic engine cooling fan drive.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8 Series (T8.380, T8.415, T8.xxx Series)
  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland TM Series (TM120, TM130, TM140, TM155)

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fault using an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the machine's diagnostic display to confirm if it is active or stored.

  2. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness and the electrical connector at the Vistronic fan drive (5-cavity female connector X-789F) for chafing, broken wires, or corrosion.

  3. Check for proper 5V reference, 12V power, and ground at the fan plug located near the valve cover.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the fan control solenoid circuit for continuity to the ECU (to rule out an open wire) and continuity to ground (to rule out a short).

  5. Measure the internal resistance of the fan control solenoid to determine if the solenoid itself is internally open or shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic tests reveal a broken wire or shorted harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring loom or replace the 5-cavity connector.

  3. Remove the Fan Assembly

If the solenoid itself has failed internally, the Vistronic fan drive must be replaced. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fan hub.

  4. Dismount the Fan

Unbolt the fan blades from the fan drive hub.

  5. Remove the Hub

Unthread the Vistronic fan drive hub from the water pump/pulley assembly.

  6. Install the New Part

Thread the new Vistronic fan drive onto the water pump and reattach the fan blades to the new hub.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the fan drive and reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EASY tool or a DTC eraser) to clear the ENG 3383 fault code from the Engine ECU and run the machine to verify the cooling fan operates correctly.
