New Holland ENG 3402 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Rail Pressure Sensor: Maximum Rail Pressure Exceeded
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the fuel pressure in the common rail has exceeded the maximum safe limiting value (e.g., exceeding 179 bar / 2595.5 psi for more than 2 seconds), indicating a mechanical restriction in the fuel return, a sticking pressure relief valve, or a faulty rail pressure sensor.

Check the cause
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or PT-Box tool to check for related electrical faults. Faults such as DTC-4155 / SPN-16725 (Fuel metering unit intermittent electrical connection failure) can cause this code and must be diagnosed and resolved first.
Check the fuel backflow (return lines) to ensure they are not pinched, kinked, or blocked. A blocked return line will cause rail pressure to spike.
Check if the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the fuel rail is sticking closed.
Visually inspect the relevant harnesses and connectors for the rail pressure sensor and fuel metering unit. Look for damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.
Repair steps
Resolve Active Codes
If any related fuel metering or electrical circuit faults are present, resolve them and use the diagnostic tool to confirm they are inactive.
Clear Blockages
If the fuel return line is restricted, clean or replace the affected hoses to restore proper backflow.
Replace the PRV
If the return lines are clear but the pressure remains too high, remove and replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the fuel rail, as it is likely sticking.
Replace the Sensor
If the PRV is functioning normally and mechanical pressure is within spec, the Rail Pressure Sensor is likely failing and reading out of range. Replace the sensor.
Reset ECU Data
If the rail pressure sensor is replaced, you must perform the 'Replacement of the Rail Pressure sensor - Reset ECU Data' procedure using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) before returning the machine to service.
