ENG 3409

New Holland ENG 3409 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Engine Oil Pressure: Oil Pressure Too Low (at engine running)

Issue description

The engine control module detects that the engine oil pressure has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold while the engine is actively running. This can indicate a genuine loss of oil pressure (mechanical failure) or a faulty sensor/circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • L220
  • L225
  • L318
  • L328
  • C227
  • C327
  • C337
  • Tractors
  • Combines

Check the cause

  1. Verify mechanical oil pressure using a mechanical gauge to rule out genuine low pressure, low oil level, clogged filter, or failing pump

  2. Visually inspect the Engine ECU and Oil Pressure Switch connections for security, corrosion, abrasion, and damage

  3. Test the wiring harness for continuity, open circuits, or shorts to ground between the oil pressure switch and the Engine ECU (routes through ECU Connector X-016 pin 6 and Chassis Ground X-017 pin 3 on some models)

Repair steps

  1. Check Oil Level

Ensure the engine oil is at the correct level on the dipstick and that the oil filter is not restricted.

  2. Test Actual Pressure

Connect a mechanical gauge to the engine block. Start the engine briefly to confirm if the oil pressure is actually low or if the sensor is lying.

  3. Inspect Wiring

If mechanical pressure is within OEM specifications, disconnect the oil pressure switch/sensor. Inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-back terminals.

  4. Test the Circuit

Use a multimeter to test the sensor wiring back to the Engine ECU for shorts to ground or open circuits.

  5. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring harness tests good and the mechanical pressure is verified, the oil pressure switch/sensor has failed internally. Remove the old sensor and install a new OEM replacement.

  6. Clear and Verify

Clear the ENG 3409 fault code using a diagnostic scan tool. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the dash gauge/warning light operates normally.
