The engine control system has detected a short circuit (abnormally low resistance or a direct path to ground) in the electrical circuit specifically for the glow plug located in cylinder number 1.

   Verify the Code: Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to verify that the ENG 3414 fault code is currently active.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the glow plug control module to the cylinder 1 glow plug. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas where the wire might be shorting directly to the engine block (ground).

   Resistance Test: Disconnect the glow plug bus bar/connector. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the cylinder 1 glow plug by placing one probe on the plug's terminal and the other on the engine block. A reading of near 0 ohms confirms an internal short circuit within the glow plug itself.

   Voltage Drop Test: With the glow plug switch engaged, verify that the control module is delivering the correct voltage to the glow plug rail.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery's negative terminal to prevent electrical shock or accidental shorting during the repair.

   Access the Glow Plugs

   Locate the glow plugs on the cylinder head of the engine.

   Remove the Bus Connector

   Remove the retaining nut securing the glow plug bus connector/wire, and carefully pull the connector off the glow plugs.

   Extract the Faulty Plug

   Using a deep socket, carefully unscrew and remove the shorted cylinder 1 glow plug from the cylinder head.

   Install the New Plug

   Thread the new glow plug into cylinder 1 by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the OEM specified torque.

   Reassemble

   Reinstall the glow plug bus connector and secure it with the retaining nut.

   Restore Power

   Reconnect the battery's negative terminal.

   Clear Codes

   Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3414 fault code from the Engine ECU.

   Test Operation

   Start the engine to verify that the cold start system operates correctly and the fault code does not return.
