New Holland ENG 3415 – Engine ECU: Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Short Circuit in Cylinder 2 Glow Plug

Issue description

The control module has detected a short circuit (either an internal short within the glow plug itself or a short to ground in the wiring harness) on the circuit supplying power to the glow plug for cylinder number 2.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Fault: Connect the Electronic Service Tool to the diagnostic connector. Start and operate the machine to confirm if fault code 3415 is currently active.

  2. Isolate the Short: Turn the key switch OFF. Disconnect the wiring harness from the cylinder 2 glow plug.

  3. Test the Glow Plug: Measure the resistance of the cylinder 2 glow plug to ground using a multimeter. A reading of zero (or near zero dead short) indicates the glow plug has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Test the Harness: If the glow plug tests within normal resistance specifications, measure the resistance through the harness without the sensor/plug connected to check for a short to ground in the wiring between the Engine ECU / Glow Plug Control Module and the plug.

Repair steps

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent accidental arcing.

  2. Locate the cylinder 2 glow plug on the engine block.

  3. Carefully remove the retaining nut and disconnect the electrical wire/harness from the top of the glow plug.

  4. If the harness was found to be shorted during diagnostics, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  5. If the glow plug is internally shorted, use a deep socket to carefully unthread and remove the defective glow plug from the cylinder head.

  6. Thread the new OEM glow plug into cylinder 2 by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect the electrical wire to the glow plug and secure the retaining nut.

  8. Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use the Electronic Service Tool to clear the inactive fault codes.

  9. Start the engine and verify that code ENG 3415 does not return.
