ENG 3416

New Holland ENG 3416 – ENGINE ECU: Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Short Circuit in Cylinder 3 Glow Plug

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine control system has detected a short circuit in the electrical circuit specifically for the glow plug located in cylinder number 3.

Applies to these machines

  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • C227
  • SR175
  • L320
  • W50C
  • W60C
  • W70C
  • W80C

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Code: Connect the Electronic Service Tool to the diagnostic connector to confirm ENG 3416 is currently active.

  2. Prep for Testing: Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

  3. Isolate the Component: Disconnect the wire harness connector from the cylinder 3 glow plug.

  4. Measure Resistance: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the glow plug terminal and the chassis ground. (Note: Ensure the chassis ground connection is clean and free of paint, oil, or dirt).

  5. If resistance is less than 0.75 Ω: The glow plug itself is shorted internally. Proceed to replace the glow plug.

  6. If resistance is approximately 1 Ω: The glow plug is functioning normally. The short circuit is located in the wiring harness leading to the glow plug. Inspect the harness for chafing or melted insulation.

  7. If resistance is greater than 20,000 Ω: There is an open circuit in the glow plug (though this usually triggers a different code, it warrants replacement).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative (–) battery cable from the battery to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Access the Glow Plugs

Locate the glow plugs on the engine cylinder head, typically positioned near the fuel injectors.

  3. Remove Wiring

Remove the retaining nut securing the electrical wire to the cylinder 3 glow plug and pull the wire aside.

  4. Remove the Glow Plug

Carefully unscrew and extract the faulty glow plug from the cylinder head.

  5. Install New Part

Thread the new glow plug into the cylinder head and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reassemble

Reattach the wire harness to the glow plug and secure it with the nut.

  7. Restore Power & Test

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start and operate the machine, then use the Electronic Service Tool to confirm the fault code has been successfully eliminated.
