ENG 3424

New Holland ENG 3424 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC7: Fuel Filter Clogged

Issue description

This condition indicates that the engine control system has detected a restriction in fuel flow or a pressure drop across the fuel filter, meaning the filter is overloaded with dirt, debris, water, or degraded fuel sludge and can no longer supply adequate fuel volume to the injection system.

Applies to these machines

  • L220
  • L228
  • SR175
  • C227
  • C232
  • T4.55
  • T4.75
  • T4020
  • T4030
  • T4040
  • T4050
  • CX8040
  • CX8050
  • CX8060
  • Boomer
  • WorkMaster

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel quality and level to ensure the tank has sufficient fuel and the correct fuel type is being used for the temperature conditions.

  2. Inspect the fuel system for contamination, including water intrusion, microbial growth, or heavy sludge.

  3. Inspect fuel pipes and hoses for kinks, cracks, leaks, or blockages that could simulate a clogged filter restriction.

  4. Drain the fuel filter/water separator to see if excessive water or debris flows out.

  5. Verify that the fuel pressure sensor and its wiring harness are not damaged, as a faulty sensor can erroneously trigger pressure-related fault codes.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool. Clean the area around the fuel filter housing to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  2. Place a catch pan under the filter and open the drain valve at the bottom of the fuel filter to drain the fuel and any trapped water.

  3. Remove the clogged fuel filter element using a filter wrench if necessary.

  4. Lubricate the O-rings on the new fuel filter with clean diesel fuel.

  5. Install the new fuel filter element and tighten it according to the manufacturer's specifications.

  6. Bleed the air from the fuel system.

This is a critical step; failing to bleed the system will result in a no-start condition or rough running.

  7. Start the engine, check for any fuel leaks around the new filter, and verify that the ENG 3424 fault code has cleared.
