ENG 343

New Holland ENG 343 – Engine Controller: Engine Controller Failure - Hardware Failure

Issue description

A fatal internal hardware or circuitry failure within the engine's computer. The microprocessor, internal memory (EEPROM), or internal power supply components have failed, preventing the module from processing data correctly or communicating reliably with the machine's CAN-bus network.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the battery voltage is stable and within specification to rule out severe voltage drops or alternator voltage spikes.

  2. Disconnect the ECU and inspect the harness connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Perform a power and ground load test to verify that the ECU is receiving proper unswitched battery power, switched ignition power, and solid grounds.

  4. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the DTCs. If ENG 343 returns immediately upon key-on, the internal hardware is permanently damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Engine ECU, which is typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block (on FPT engines) or in a dedicated electronics bay.

  3. Remove the Harnesses

Carefully release the locking levers on the wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU.

  4. Dismount the ECU

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket. Note the presence of any vibration-damping rubber isolators and transfer them to the new unit if necessary.

  5. Install the New ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the bolts.

  6. Reconnect

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers click fully into place. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Programming & Calibration

Connect the New Holland EST diagnostic tool to flash the ECU with the correct software payload for your specific machine's PIN/serial number. You may also need to program the fuel injector trim codes into the new ECU.
