New Holland ENG 3513 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): SCR Catalyst not present _Relation of temperature behavior between both Catalyst Temperatures not plausible

Issue description

This fault indicates an issue with the thermal plausibility across the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. If the ECU sees that the temperature behavior between the upstream and downstream EGT sensors is nearly identical or outside expected physics, it assumes the SCR catalyst substrate is physically missing, the sensors are installed in the wrong positions, or a sensor is providing skewed data.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the SCR canister to verify that the SCR catalyst has not been physically removed, bypassed, or hollowed out

  2. Ensure the upstream and downstream EGT sensors have not been accidentally swapped during previous maintenance

  3. Perform a cold soak test using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live data for both SCR temperature sensors after sitting overnight; both should read within a few degrees of ambient air temperature

  4. Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors for the EGT sensors for chafing, melting, or corrosion

  5. Look for soot trails or exhaust leaks between the engine turbocharger and the SCR canister

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Hook up the CNH EST to the machine's diagnostic port to verify ENG 3513 is active and check the freeze-frame data to see the exact temperatures logged when the fault occurred.

  2. Test the Sensors

    Based on the cold soak and live data tests, identify if one of the EGT sensors is faulty.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If a sensor is skewed, disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness. Apply penetrating oil to the threads on the exhaust pipe, carefully unscrew the faulty EGT sensor, and install the replacement. Torque to OEM specifications and apply anti-seize only if specified (avoiding the sensor tip).

  4. Inspect Catalyst Substrate

    If both sensors test perfectly and the wiring is intact, you must remove the exhaust piping to visually inspect the face of the SCR catalyst. If the substrate is melted, cracked, or missing, the entire SCR canister must be replaced.

  5. Clear and Validate

    Clear the fault codes using the EST. Perform a stationary forced regeneration or an SCR dosing system test to heat up the exhaust. Monitor the live temperature data to ensure the upstream and downstream sensors now show a plausible temperature differential.
